But we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land
On April 3, 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. spoke in Memphis, Tennessee.
He arrived late because of bad weather and initially wasn’t even planning to speak. Yet once he took the stage, he delivered what I consider his greatest speech: I’ve Been to the Mountaintop.
As the speech progressed, it became increasingly personal and spiritual. Near the end, King spoke openly about the dangers he faced:
“I don’t know what will happen now.”
Drawing on the biblical story of Moses, he described seeing the future from a distance—a future he believed would bring justice and equality.
Then came the crucial line:
“I may not get there with you…”
The audience grew quiet. It sounded as though he was acknowledging the possibility of his own death.
Then, at 42:40 in the speech, he continued:
“But we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land.”
The crowd erupted.
They weren’t simply applauding a sentence. They were responding to the courage, conviction, and certainty of a leader who believed the movement would succeed, whether or not he lived to see it.
The following day, April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated.
Because of that, the final minutes of the speech feel almost like a farewell. The audience at 42:40 did not know what would happen the next day, but they sensed they were witnessing a remarkable moment—a leader speaking with unusual clarity, urgency, and faith in the future.
