The player wears the famous red-and-white stripes of Athletic Club Bilbao, one of the world’s most unique football clubs. Athletic has followed the philosophy of developing and fielding players with strong Basque ties for well over a century. Supporting Athletic is often seen as supporting Basque identity, language, history, and community.
The woman leaning over the fence represents generations of supporters—mothers, grandmothers, families, and neighborhoods. The young footballer symbolizes the future. Together they tell a story of traditions being passed from one generation to the next.
On the opposite side of Gothenburg, across the city from where I live by the sea, there’s a former working-class neighborhood. It still carries that identity, strong local pride, and authentic city culture. The area is called Olskroken.
There, you’ll find a true Italian street restaurant. So I took the tram across the city to experience it.
And when you walk into a restaurant and see a football team scarf on the wall, you can immediately say: this is Italy. Bologna isn’t my team, but the owner’s pride, reflected in that scarf, creates an atmosphere that elevates the entire dinner experience.
